Hockey Chattanooga: News Channel 9 coverage

Greetings to everyone. Just a quick heads-up: Dave Staley from News Channel 9 came to the rink last night and took some video of the guys playing and interviewed the "brass". He's planning to run the piece Friday at 6 and possibly again on Saturday and Sunday. He said for sure though, 6 on Friday night. He was there filming a good portion of the first and second games. So, tune in and you may see yourself making a great play on TV. He said his interest was piqued when he saw the piece about Hockey Chattanooga in the weekly section of the Times Free Press. If you missed it you can check it out here:

AHL All Star game.. 3rd period report.

The final period of the AHL All Star Game is over. It was a great game and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Final score 11-8 in favor of the East.

Let me get the negative out of the way. The commentators and TV broadcast was horrible. The audio quality drove me close to insanity during gameplay. There were hardly any replays and they would never tell us any stats during the game.

Ok. Rant over.. Time for game review. Lots of great saves by both goalies but naturally I'm going to brag abotu Dekanich. Lots of great saved including what looked like his own version of the YMCA with 10:32 left in the game. With 8:09 left, Gordon scores his 2nd goal of the night to extend the East's lead. Then Bobby Butler strikes for the East off the post with 7:35 left in game. With 2:17 left Alex Giroux gets his 2nd of the night with a goal for the West.

It was nice to hear the TV announcers spend 10 minutes talking about Dekanich during the game. Gave him major props for his size and skills. They said " Nashville likes em big" in which I yelled at the TV "That's what she said!" He was the topic of conversation for most of the 3rd and I actually saw multiple highlights from him. Somebody at the TV has a man crush on him. Francais Wathier gets teh final goal for the East with 8 secs left int eh 3rd.

AHL All Star game.. 2nd period report.

This time I wasn't busy doing other things. Should be a better report for all..

At the end of the 2nd. The East lead the West 8-6.

The cheering continues every time Giroux touches the puck and the audio for the TV feed keeps cutting in and out but still an exciting game. Both goalies put up a phenomenal performance and each make some amazing saves. Still no goals by Klasen and @Dexshow is expected to play in the net in the 3rd. Klasen did end the 2nd with 2 assists.  A ton of passing in this period an dnot too many shots. The game went back and forth the whole time. It wasn't till 9:47 left in the 2nd when the East scored with a goal by Rhett Rakhshani. Jeremy Williams gets the 2nd of the period for the East with 8:33 left. The West Finally scored with 7:55 left with a goal by Sergei Shirokov. Jamie Arneil gets another goal for the East with 5:46 to go. He made Sanford look like a dancing monkey with that play. Seconds later Matt Anderson tallies another to the East score. With 2:28 to go the West score with a goal by Spencer Machacek.

Something of note. Andrew Gordon did break the record for the fastest goal in the AHL All Star Game tonight. The record of :29 was replaced by :16 in the 1st.

AHL All Star game.. 1st period report.

What an exciting start to the AHL All Star Game!

Its always fun to see the stars of you favorite sport come together for a pick up game. The future of the NHL got together today for the annual AHL All Star Game. Milwaukee stars Linus Klasen and Mark Dekanich (follow him on Twitter @Dexshow) were present tonight and supposedly the Roscoe (Milwaukee's Mascot).

At the end of the first it is 4-4. Alexander Giroux is definitely the hometown favorite and every time he touches the puck tonight, the crowd goes crazy. Giroux has already scored 1 goal tonight.

The West took an lead of 4-1 early on and held it through most of the 1st. As time ran down though, the East turned the tables and came back to make it 4-4. I'd give you who scored the goals but they happened so fast that i didnt get the names.

Lots of skill on the ice and plenty of action, even for non hockey fans.

Looking forward to the 2nd.

Did I mention that watching the mascots play is absolutely hilarious?

Shane O'Brien suspended for 2 games.. What is your call?

As many have heard, Nashville Predators defenseman Shane O'Brien, aka SOB, has been suspended for 2 games for intentional spearing. I along with other fans were watching the game and never really noticed it or heard about it till the announcement was made. The incident happened during the Panthers game at the end of the 1st period. Stephen Weiss was attempting to get the puck on a rebound as the clock ran out. On first view of the play, my reaction (along with the viewing party) was "Why is that guy laying on the ice like he took a stick to the face?" The Florida feed nor the Preds showed a replay to suggest why this happened. As quickly as it happened we forgot about it.

Here are my thoughts on the call....

I have watched the video many times and remain on the fence on the call all the time. From one angle, it indeed looks like SOB speared the guy in the face with his stick. SOB was looking up at the guy and not the puck. With this angle, i agree it is spearing BUT.....

Angle 2 provides a different story in my eyes. When i watch it, it doesn't look like SOB is intentionally after the guy. It shows his stick trying to play the puck and get it away from the net.

The NHL decided that since SOB has done this before (Against Avery back in 09 i believe), he is a "repeat offender" and is suspended 2 games. This also means he forfeits 2 games pay which comes to $39,024.40.

Below is a link to the video to make your own decision.

Finally finished

As per my last blog, I have been doing a study. It was suppose to be finished 2 weeks after my last posting but something came up and the results were trashed.

I have been doing a study on my gas mileage with the use of different brands of gasoline and their percentages of Ethanol inside them. The results speak for themselves and i PROMISE they are 100% unbiased.

History:
I travel a lot. More than normal for someone my age. I travel almost 50,000 miles a year. My record was a couple of years ago. I traveled 62,000 miles. I do everything from Paintball, Scuba, and now Hockey. Mileage racks up quick (If only credit cards had reward miles for driving.) I use all kinds of gasoline. Usually I pick a brand based on price and convenience. This summer, Shell Gasoline in my area switched to Non-Ethanol only (Smart move since they are right next to the lake.) Over the next few weeks i noticed that the mileage i was getting out of my car increased significantly. I was getting 50 - 60 more miles per tank than normal. I then decided to do a study on different brands of gasoline and with ethanol and without.

Hypothesis:
Non-Ethanol gasoline provides more mileage than Ethanol.

The Experiment:
I spent a couple of weeks deciding how i was going to do this make this as fair and accurate as possible, and here are the rules i came up with...
  1. Do not count highway mileage. I do most of my driving to and from work and school.
  2. Rotate a different gasoline station in the experiment. Weather changes throughout the year and I want my results to reflect conditions as close as possible to the other.
  3. Do not count weeks with odd travel.
  4. Full tank fills only. When the light came on I would fill the tank. Each fill was right arounf 12 gallons.
Results:

As you can see, I saw a huge difference between each brand. The non ethanol Shell gasoline provided the best result and notably made my engine run smoother. The Indian non ethanol provide decent mileage but I felt it was too cheap and made the engine run funny.

Another little side test I ran was on my boat as well.. Unfortunately the results were not good. I was unknowingly running ethanol and it killed the engine over the summer. Had it rebuilt and now it runs non only. Haven't had a single problem since.
