As many have heard, Nashville Predators defenseman Shane O'Brien, aka SOB, has been suspended for 2 games for intentional spearing. I along with other fans were watching the game and never really noticed it or heard about it till the announcement was made. The incident happened during the Panthers game at the end of the 1st period. Stephen Weiss was attempting to get the puck on a rebound as the clock ran out. On first view of the play, my reaction (along with the viewing party) was "Why is that guy laying on the ice like he took a stick to the face?" The Florida feed nor the Preds showed a replay to suggest why this happened. As quickly as it happened we forgot about it.
Here are my thoughts on the call....
I have watched the video many times and remain on the fence on the call all the time. From one angle, it indeed looks like SOB speared the guy in the face with his stick. SOB was looking up at the guy and not the puck. With this angle, i agree it is spearing BUT.....
Angle 2 provides a different story in my eyes. When i watch it, it doesn't look like SOB is intentionally after the guy. It shows his stick trying to play the puck and get it away from the net.
The NHL decided that since SOB has done this before (Against Avery back in 09 i believe), he is a "repeat offender" and is suspended 2 games. This also means he forfeits 2 games pay which comes to $39,024.40.
Below is a link to the video to make your own decision.
